Happy Friday everyone! It’s almost the weekend, which calls for a fun little recipe that we would HIGHLY recommend incorporating into your weekend plans. Today’s recipe is for hjertevafler, or Norwegian heart-shaped waffles. These waffles are sweet and soft, lightly spiced with cardamom, and usually eaten as a dessert or treat rather than for breakfast. If you don’t happen to have the right waffle iron to make them, don’t worry! You can use whatever iron you have on hand and they will still turn out absolutely delicious ❤️

For reference, here* is the waffle iron that we used for this recipe, but again, use whatever you have! The recipe itself is so simple. Mix together wet and dry ingredients separately, then combine. Make sure the milk that you use is slightly warmed up so that it doesn’t cause the melted butter to solidify and make the batter lumpy. Use your waffle iron to make the waffles, then top with whatever you like and dig in! We make a delicious sour cream topping and add berries as well, but it’s completely customizable.

Ingredients

  • 50 grams (1/4 cup) sugar
  • 150 grams (1 + 1/4 cup) flour
  • 230 ml (1 cup) milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 grams (1/2 stick) melted unsalted butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of cardamom (optional)

Topping

  • Sour cream
  • Sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Fresh fruit

Instructions

  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together your dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, and cardamom (optional).
  • In a separate bowl, combine your wet ingredients: sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter. You may have to heat up your milk slightly so that the butter doesn't re-solidify when you add it!
  • Combine the wet and dry ingredients until everything is just mixed – it's okay if it's still slightly lumpy!
    Waffle batter ready for cooking
  • Follow the instructions for your waffle iron to preheat the iron. Once ready, add about half a cup of waffle batter, spread it out, and let it cook for about 3 minutes (or whatever your waffle iron says!) until the waffles are golden brown and cooked all the way through. Repeat until you are out of batter.
  • To make a delicious topping, mix together sour cream, lemon juice, and a bit of sugar to taste. Serve with fresh fruit and enjoy! You can also use whatever toppings you want!

Had these this morning and they were perfect! They were just the right amount of sweet to eat on their own, with the sour cream topping, or even with syrup if you have an extra sweet tooth. We even used the heart-shaped waffle iron. They came out so cute and the individual hearts are the perfect size for finger food.
