For Your Next: Autumn Event

September 29, 2022

Today’s blog post is in our “For Your Next” series, which gives you menu ideas for events in your life. The first explored ideas for a summer dinner party menu; check it out at this link. As we are a couple of weeks into autumn already, we thought the best theme for this menu was an autumn event! The recipes we have linked in this post are some of our favorites from our blog and we’ve put them together as we would if we were to host an event. By “event,” we don’t mean anything fancy necessarily! Even if it’s just a dinner with friends or family, it can be fun to plan out a little menu ahead of time. We hope this post inspires you and gives you some ideas for your next big dinner or event.

A glass of mulled wine with an orange slice.
Drink: Gløgg (Mulled Wine)
This is Danish gløgg, also known as mulled wine. Popular in Scandinavian countries, which all have their own variations, gløgg is delicious, warm, and a perfect Christmas drink! In Denmark, we traditionally drink it on the 23rd of December alongside æbleskiver. However, in addition to being a traditional Christmas drink, it is a perfect autumnal drink, especially on a chilly day! Simmer this for a couple of hours and you will not only have a perfect drink that leaves you warm and cozy, but your kitchen will also smell amazing!

Mulled white wine in a glass.
Drink: Hvid Gløgg (Mulled White Wine)
This is a great alternative to the above mulled wine if you prefer white wine! It is made with the same extract but with a dry white wine and some apple cider added. Possibly the most autumnal drink you could ever find!

Cheese twist buns in a pile on a cutting board.
Starter: Ostesnurrer (Cheese Twists)
These savory cheese buns are filled with garlic, olive oil, and cheese, and they pair perfectly with any main dish. They are easily customizable to whatever cheese you have on hand, and feel free to add ham or prosciutto to make them even tastier. Serve them as a starter at your autumn event and your guests will be so impressed. Just make sure they don't fill up on bread so they are ready for the rest of the food! Danish meatballs on a plate with potatoes on the side.
Main Dish: Frikadeller (Danish Meatballs)
These pan-fried Danish meatballs are simple to put together and make a really hearty, filling, and delicious meal! If you have to make a big batch, give yourself plenty of time and keep the cooked ones warm in the oven while you continue frying. Or, for an even easier process, bake them entirely in the oven instead of pan-frying. These are one of our go-to recipes when we have guests coming over because everyone loves them! They are also so hearty and warming, which makes them perfect for the autumn.

Danish creamy scalloped potatoes with onion and thyme.
Side: Flødekartofler (Danish Scalloped Potatoes)
These creamy potatoes are an amazing side dish to any type of meat or main protein, or can be served on their own with a salad and some bread. They are so simple, yet so delicious! Our trick is to just arrange the top layer of potatoes nicely – then they will look so impressive but you can make them much faster! We promise that if you serve this delicious potato dish alongside Danish frikadeller, your guests will leave with full stomachs and big smiles on their faces.

Pickled beets in a jar.
Side: Syltede Rødbeder (Pickled Beets)
These beets are vibrantly purple with a nice zing from the pickling mixture. They pair really well with the main and side dish in this menu because they cut right through the fattiness! These are one of our favorite small side dishes to make and always have on hand because they are so easy, last for a long time, and taste so yummy.

Apple cake on a cake stand topped with cinnamon and brown sugar.
Dessert: Æblekage (Apple Cake)
A delicious, fluffy apple cake perfect for the fall and winter months. The cinnamon and apple flavors just represent autumn so wonderfully, and if you serve this cake alongside coffee and tea, it will make for the coziest autumn dessert! The best part is that this cake is really easy to make, so you don't even have to spend time slaving over an impressive dessert for your guests.
