Chocolate + Orange: A Winning Combination
Hi everyone! Emma here. Since moving to the UK about two months ago, I’ve found that Brits have a real appreciation for the combination of chocolate and orange. As many of my friends in America hate the combination, this was really exciting for me to find out! I personally think that there aren’t many other flavors out there that pair as well with chocolate than orange does.
Terry’s Chocolate Orange
So recently, at the encouragement of all of my housemates, I tried a Terry’s chocolate orange* for the first time. If you’ve never heard of this delicious and ~interactive~ treat, allow me to explain how amazing it is. A chocolate orange is made of very good chocolate flavored with orange oil. It’s then shaped like an orange with actual chocolate wedges that you can eat individually. Anyway, it was a sensational experience, to say the least. There’s just something about the combination of the sharp citrus flavor and richness of the chocolate that creates a perfect balance!

An Amazing Fall Recipe
The chocolate orange experience was how the idea for this recipe was born! While this isn’t a Scandinavian recipe, we thought we would post it anyway since it turned out so delicious. It’s also quite fitting that we’ve coincidentally posted this recipe on Halloween, as the main colors are very Halloween-y. Plus, chocolate and orange is a classic Christmas and winter combination, so as the weather gets colder, this is the perfect recipe to make! Browned butter, orange-flavored chocolate, orange zest, and delicious toffee make this one of our favorite brownies ever – try the recipe down below! Chocolate and Orange Toffee Brownies
Ingredients
- 113 grams (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 160 grams (1/2 cup + 1 tbsp) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 100 grams (1 bar or 3/4 cup chocolate chips) orange flavored chocolate
- 70 grams (1/2 cup) all purpose flour
- 25 grams (1/4 cup) cocoa powder
- Pinch of salt
- Zest of one medium orange
- 110 grams toffee or caramel candies (corresponds to about 1 pack of Werther's Original soft caramels)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 F (176 C).
- Melt the butter over medium-low heat and continue cooking until the milk solids start to turn a golden color. Remove from the heat because they will continue to brown!
- Add the granulated sugar to the browned butter and whisk for about 30 seconds to combine. Let this cool for a few minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, salt)
- Cut the toffee or caramel pieces in half or chop into finer pieces (it's up to you on the size!)
- Transfer the butter and sugar mixture to a medium mixing bowl. Melt the orange flavoed chocolate either on the stove or in the microwave. Add in the vanilla extract and melted chocolate to the butter and sugar mixture and whisk well to combine.
- Grate in the zest of one medium orange to the chocolate, butter, and sugar mixture. Whisk to combine.
- Add the eggs to the chocolate mixture one at a time, whisking to combine. Make sure the mixture isn’t too hot at this point so your eggs don’t scramble!
- Sift in the dry ingredients and start folding until well combined. Note: If your batter looks split or really lumpy, you can add a little more flour to bring it back together!
- Add in the chopped caramel/toffee and fold to distribute evenly.
- Transfer to a parchment lined and greased baking tin (ours was a 9in x 6in glass baking pan).
- Bake for about 30 minutes until a knife comes out mostly clean (it will have some crumbs stuck to it, as fudgy brownies shouldn’t be totally set in the middle!). Let cool before slicing and enjoy!
