May 14, 2024

Today’s Post

This week, we wanted to share a few of our recent favorite things, recipes, experiences, places, etc. We love this series because it gives us a chance to recommend some great things to you guys! While we do spend a lot of our time baking and cooking for this blog, we also love trying out new recipes. Additionally, we love to travel and visit new places, so that’s something we tend to include in these round-ups as well. Are there any recipes you’ve tried recently that you think you’ll keep coming back to? Are there any places that you’ve been that you’d recommend to us? Let us know in the comments below.

1. Claire Saffitz’s Croissant Recipe

If you’ve ever told yourself that you want to try making croissants someday, this is the recipe to use. It’s very easy to follow and while it does take a couple of days to work through every step carefully, it’s totally worth it. The best part is that there’s a video to go with the recipe, so you can get a visual as well as a written indication of what each stage should look like. And once you’ve perfected croissants, you can try your hand at our recipe for Danish pastry dough, which is pretty similar!

2. Birria tacos

One thing that I really crave living in the UK is good Mexican food. It’s not easy to find, and it’s sadly not easy to find ingredients to make homemade Mexican food either. However, I recently splurged on some dried chilies and a tortilla press* (link to one on Amazon!) to make homemade birria tacos. And it was absolutely worth it! The recipe I used can be found below and then you can make adjustments based on what you have on hand.

Taco Tuesdays just got an upgrade with Mob’s Birria Tacos. Best enjoyed with a squeeze of lime, fresh salsa and dipped in a gorgeous broth. Yum.

3. Scandikitchen

I recently had a few hours to spare in London, which is rare for me, so I decided to make the most of it and visit a favorite cafe and shop of ours, Scandikitchen. This is the go-to resource for Scandinavian food in the UK, whether you need a shipment of Christmas or Easter goodies or you want to stop in for an open-faced sandwich or a hotdog on a random weekday. It’s cozy inside and the coffee is delicious, so you can’t go wrong paying a visit here if you ever get a chance.

4. Houston, TX

Sofie here writing this paragraph – I recently took a short trip to Houston, Texas, where we did some fun sight seeing! Some highlights for me were the Space Center, where we learned a lot about missions to the moon, planned Mars explorations, and more! We also went to the Museum of Natural Science which has an impressive paleontology exhibit with plenty of dinosaur fossils and more! It’s always fun to explore a new city, and Houston definitely has a lot to explore. We also can’t go anywhere without thinking about or planning our days around food. Our favorite restaurants we visited were Lucille’s, which had some amazing fried chicken, and Kata Robata, with amazingly fresh fish for sushi lovers but also plenty of other options if you don’t eat raw fish! I definitely recommend checking out both if you can while you’re there. Just be sure to make a reservation in advance so you don’t have to wait! Now that I’m in Austin, Houston is a pretty close drive, so I’m sure there will be more updates about things to do in Houston in the future!

5. Ethiopian food

If you’ve had Ethiopian food before, you’ll know how excited I was when I found one in the city I live in in the UK, Birmingham. The restaurant we went to is called Birmingham Blue Nile Restaurant. It’s been a favorite cuisine of mine ever since I first tried it in Boston nearly ten years ago. If you get one of the large plates with lots of different curries, you can try a bit of everything. And the bread, called injera, is deliciously sour and the perfect accompaniment for the savory and spicy curries. A great meal!

Thanks for reading!

That’s all for today’s round-up of favorites. We hope you’re inspired to try any or all of these things! And feel free to leave us a comment below with any of your recent favorites.
