Week Four: Five Things We Have Been Loving This Week

May 15, 2023

Today’s Post

Today’s post is one of our “Five Things We Have Been Loving This Week” posts, where we share some of our current favorites. First and foremost, we have been loving this new series, as it gives us the opportunity to share more than just our recipes with you. We have many other hobbies and interests beyond baking and cooking, so these posts allow us to delve a little deeper into those. Plus, we hope that these posts help you get to know us a bit better! At the end of the day, Skandibaking is a very personal blog to us, so we want you to understand who we are. Finally, we want you to be inspired by these posts to check out some new books, films, or even try out new activities – there is always something new out there to explore!

The view of a soccer or football match.

Thing 1: Football (or soccer)

If you know us or our family personally, you know that our favorite sport by far is football. Ever since we were young, we have played and watched it religiously. Sofie is the only one of us four siblings that didn’t play it (she rowed instead). However, even she was forced to watch it on a regular basis. Mostly, we watched the Premier League every weekend and, of course, the World Cup and European Championships when they came along. Football is huge in Denmark, which you can read more about at this blog post here. Our Danish side is definitely where our love for the game came from. Now that I live in the UK, I am lucky enough to be able to attend games. I recently saw Manchester United play at home against Aston Villa, which reminded me how amazing it is to be there in-person! If you visit the UK, I would recommend going to a game if you can get reasonably priced tickets.

Thing 2: IKEA

Now, I don’t think there are many people that need to be convinced that IKEA is an incredible place. I am certain we can all agree on that! Since we were kids, we have loved taking day trips to IKEA. Their furniture is affordable and sturdy (we can vouch for that, having grown up in a mainly IKEA-furnished household). Plus, there is the added benefit of getting to eat Swedish meatballs for lunch. That is, before moving on to the hell that is the self-serve furniture area. Anyway, I went for a little trip last weekend to pick out furniture and other necessities, and it really is great! As a Dane living in the UK, IKEA also stocks plenty of sweets and food that remind me of home, so that is always an added bonus.

A hiking trail.

Thing 3: Muddy Hikes

One thing to know about the UK is that if you are planning a nice day out, you can be reasonably certain it is going to rain. Last week, I had planned a hike with two of my friends in the Peak District. It is a lovely part of the country with plenty of hills, sheep, and moorland – a great place for hiking! However, it poured rain most of the walk, which made for a very muddy trail. I think I slipped about four or five times, although the gash in my knee can confirm that I only really fell down once (it was not graceful). Anyway, regardless of the weather, the hike was lovely. There were beautiful views of streams and rivers, as well as huge green hills and even a few caves. I got to “baa” at some sheep with their little lambs, who were just adorable. Would highly recommend checking it out if you are ever in the UK!

Thing 4: Long Weekends Away

Today’s post seems to be almost entirely UK-based, but there has just been a lot happening over here! You may have heard about the coronation last weekend, which gave us a lovely day off on the Monday. I went on a trip to Wales with my boyfriend and a few friends, and it was a much needed break. We swam in freezing cold water, ate fish and chips, and even had a barbecue. We also played lots of games and drank a lot of beer. It was wonderful! Trips like that, even if they are just to a spot that isn’t too far away, are such a breath of fresh air. I even got a bit sunburnt in Wales – that’s when you know it has been a good trip!

House plants on a bench.

Thing 5: House Plants

Spring is always a great time to bring a new plant home. We love house plants and the brightness they bring to a room! As pictured, Sofie has a whole bench of plants in her home. And fun fact – there are many plants that you can propagate to create even more plants without having to buy more! A great starter plant is a pothos plant. They don’t need too much light, and can go up to a few weeks without watering! Just make sure not to overwater your plants. That’s the one mistake we’ve made too often as eager new plant owners! If you have a favorite house plant to share with us, be sure to comment below!
