It’s about time we wrote out a recipe for Denmark’s national dish – smørrebrød, aka open-faced sandwiches! We grew up eating simplified versions of the sandwiches in this recipe for lunch, and fancier versions for family events around Christmas or Easter.
Smørrebrød is, in fact, the national dish of Denmark! It translates directly to “butter bread,” which is a pretty accurate name, as the first step to making delicious smørrebrød is usually to butter your bread.
At first glance, our blog seems like a very baking-focused blog. And that’s fair enough – it is called Skandibaking after all! But the truth is, we love cooking almost as much as we love baking.
This is a dish we grew up eating at our grandmother’s house in Denmark on our summer vacations. Personally, I didn’t warm up to the idea of parsley sauce until later in life, but my siblings were always on board.
There is no better time of year to eat fish than in the summertime. In Denmark, we love to go down to the harbor and enjoy some fresh fish or fiskefrikadeller at a local restaurant, always followed by an ice cream.
